You’re wondering how it all happened.
The unofficial start of Dorcas Sommerhoff’s catering career was selling a cake to the neighbors at age 13. But she rediscovered her love of cooking for others after a call one fall afternoon in 1989. The Rombout Hunt Club had started foxhunting in Ancramdale, New York, and it needed a host and caterer for that season’s hunt breakfasts. The club called on Dorcas and her husband Chris, whose lovely dairy farm was already the setting for many of Rombout’s morning rides.
Those Saturday morning fetes at The Sommer Hof soon led to dinner parties, weddings, brunches and luncheons across Columbia and Dutchess counties. When business became too big for the small farmhouse kitchen on Wiltsie Bridge Road, Dorcas moved her newly named business, The Farmer’s Wife, into its current setting on County Route 8 in Ancramdale. There since 2002, The Farmer’s Wife and its staff have become a proud part of the Hudson Valley’s burgeoning food scene. In a region synonymous with quality and variety, The Farmer’s Wife remains the caterer of choice and a favorite destination for breakfast, lunch and prepared foods.
Since our early days cooking on a four-burner stove, The Farmer’s Wife’s guiding principles have been freshness, great flavor and consistent excellence. Now the range is a ten-burner and the fridge a walk-in, but that hasn’t changed our commitment to quality, value and service.
